Coastline Throw Blanket: FREE Crochet Pattern

The Coastline Throw Blanket is the perfect crochet blanket pattern for the upcoming cold months. Made in an aran weight yarn, this blanket not only works up faster than your typical worsted weight blanket, it also provides a great weight and makes it feel like you are wrapped up in a cozy hug. With an easy to memorize stitch repeat, this blanket is perfect for working up while doing your annual fall rewatch of Gilmore Girls or Supernatural (I can’t be the only one, right?). And the best part? You can view a free version of this blanket right here on the blog!

Yarn Suggestions

To get that extra cozy feel, for the Coastline Throw Blanket pattern I recommend using a #4 aran/heavy worsted weight or light #5 bulky weight yarn. Heavier #5 bulky weight yarns might still work, but it definitely makes for a stiffer blanket with a lot less drape. For this reason, I recommend staying on the lighter weight side.

For my blanket, I used Comfy Aran (previously named Comfy Bulky) from WeCrochet. It is a 75% Pima cotton/25% acrylic yarn, making it is soft, breathable, and easy to care for. Want to make yours in the same? They have lots of pretty colors available and the color combinations are endless.

Free Coastline Throw Blanket Crochet Pattern

Pattern Difficulty

Advanced Beginner
Skills used: working in turned rows, extended stitches, slip stitches

Materials

Crochet Hook: 7 mm, or what is required to match gauge (check out the Furls hook I use!)
Yarn: 2,175 yards total of #4/aran or #5/light bulky weight yarn (435 yards per color – 5 colors needed) + extra yarn if you are adding fringe

  • Suggested yarn: WeCrochet Comfy Aran (previously Comfy Bulky)
    • Color 1 (C1): Parchment
    • Color 2 (C2): Ivory
    • Color 3 (C3): White
    • Color 4 (C4): Sea Foam
    • Color 5 (C5): Marlin
  • If using a different yarn, make sure your yarn isn’t too bulky. A heavy bulky yarn will definitely make for a stiffer blanket with less drape.

Abbreviations

st(s): stitch(es)
ch: chain
slst: slip stitch
edc: extended double crochet

  • Yarn over, insert hook into designated stitch and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through one loop. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Then, yarn over and pull through remaining loops. Click here for step by step photos and video.

Size

If gauge is met, the finished blanket is approximately 66 inches x 50 inches (167 cm x 127 cm), not including any added fringe.

Gauge

10 sts x 8 rows of stitch pattern = 4 in x 4 in (10 cm x 10 cm)

  • NOTE: Gauge is not critical to the pattern, but if you do not match gauge, your finished blanket may end up larger or smaller than listed here and may use more or less yarn.

Notes

*This pattern is written using US terminology.

*The turning ch does NOT count as a stitch, so the first stitch will go in the same stitch as the turning chain.

*Numbers in ( ) at the end of the instruction refers to stitch count for that row. The stitch count is only listed when it changes. If it isn’t listed, assume it is the same as the last time it was written.

Pattern

Row 1: Starting with C1, fdc 165 (recommended method) OR ch 168 and edc across starting in the 4th ch from your hook. Crocheter’s choice. (165)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, loosely slst in each st across

Row 3: ch 3, turn, edc in each st across, placing the st in the back loop of the edc from 2 rows below and the front loop of the slip stitch from the last worked row. Essentially, you are working into the 2 middle loops.

  • NOTE: The paid PDF has photos showing this stitch placement as well as other helpful hints! (Etsy, Ravelry)

Rows 4 – 99: Repeat Rows 2 and 3, changing colors per the Row counts in the chart below.
