This beanie pattern has been a bit of a labor of love. I enjoy a good ribbed beanie and absolutely love the texture of the stitch combination I use in my Riptide Collection, so I decided I also wanted to make it in a traditional brim-up style beanie. However, when trying to work it in the round, I encountered a problem – the seam. Due to the nature of the stitches, the seam stuck out more than I liked and also leaned heavily, making a slant up the back of the beanie. To me, not fixing details like that gives the finished beanie an unprofessional feel, and that is not something I want to be known for in either my pattern designing and when selling my handmade makes.

So I went back to the drawing board. It took a few iterations, but I finally figured it out. Using the invisible slip stitch to join technique as well as a non-standard first stitch placement in one round of the repeat (the pattern includes pictures of this placement), the seam is now straight, and much less bulky. Hooray! It really is the little things that matter.

Yarn suggestions: This pattern uses #4/worsted weight yarn and samples were made using Premier Stitch Please Superwash Worsted and WeCrochet Swish Worsted. WeCrochet Wool of the Andes Superwash would also work well, as well as your favorite hand dyed worsted wool. Yep, hand dyed wool is not just for knitters and this project takes less than one skein! If wool isn’t your thing, other good acrylic options I would suggest are Lion Brand Heartland, Loops & Threads Impeccable, or WeCrochet Brava.

Tips & Tricks: This pattern has written instructions for a fitted, slouchy, or messy bun version in 5 sizes, but it’s easily customizable if that doesn’t quite work for you. While the 5 sizes will work for most people, the trick to meeting gauge is to keep your slip stitches loose, or else it will absolutely change the size of the beanie. Keep you tension loose, and go up a hook size if needed! However, with no set stitch multiple required, it’s easy to change the stitch count, and therefore the circumference of the beanie, if needed to better meet your needs. Want it slouchier? Add a few more repeats before decreasing. Need it more fitted than what’s written? Take a couple of repeats out. Easy peasy.

With so many options available, what are you going to make?
