Beanies & Ear Warmers, Shawls, Cowls, & Scarves

Rustic Summer Headband & Cowl Crochet Patterns

The Rustic Summer Headband & Cowl crochet patterns were designed with spring and fall in mind. Made in a lightweight DK yarn with a semi-open stitch pattern, this set will keep your ears and neck warm when you need a little bit of coverage, but still have plenty of breathability – perfect for the fickle weather of changing seasons!

If you are like me, you get really excited when the first signs of spring show up, ditch all of your heavy winter gear, and then regret it about 5 minutes after you head outside. It’s not quite cold enough for your winter beanies and scarves, but your ears and neck still need a little something, especially when the wind starts to blow (and if you are really like me, you then become super miserable for the rest of your time outdoors). Sound familiar? This is the exact scenario I had in mind when I designed these pieces.

Pattern Inspiration

I have always loved the combination of stitches in the Rustic Summer crochet patterns. The Rustic Summer Cup Cozies, Bag, and Asymmetrical Shawl were some of the very first patterns I designed, and the pattern ideas just keep coming! I had always wanted to add a beanie or headband to the collection, but wondered who would want winter gear with open stitchwork. I mean, isn’t the point of cold winter gear to keep everything fully covered?

But then last spring I was trying to spend more time outdoors and be more physically active. The only problem? While the sun was warm, the breeze was still chilly and would leave my ears ringing and achy by the time I got home. I wanted something to cover my ears, but all of my winter headbands were too hot. That’s when I realized the Rustic Summer stitch pattern in a lightweight yarn would be perfect to provide some coverage, but wouldn’t be too hot, and the idea of a matching cowl quickly followed.

Yarn Suggestions

The Rustic Summer Headband and Cowl crochet patterns use #3/DK weight yarn because I didn’t want them to be too heavy. I made mine using DK hand-dyed yarn from Hue Loco in the colorway Owl because I love the colors used in this colorway. Other options that would work well with these patterns are LB Collection Superwash Merino Wool from Lion Brand, or Swish DK or Provincial Tweed from Crochet.com. While Provincial Tweed is labelled as a worsted weight yarn, I find it is lighter and acts much more like a DK. I also think it would be super cute with these patterns. If you are looking for an acrylic or wool alternative, Brava Recycle would likely work well.

Sizing & Fit

The headband is written in 5 sizes from Baby through Large Adult while the cowl is written for 3 sizes, Child to Large Adult. The cowl is also designed to be long enough to wear over the bottom portion of your face when you need the extra warmth, but also have a soft enough drape to also easily wear it pulled beneath your chin when you start to warm up.

So if you race to be outdoors as soon as the temps start to warm up, then these patterns are going to be your new best friends. Check out the details below, then head to my shops to purchase the patterns!
