Crochet cup cozies are some of my favorite things to make when I don’t have a lot of motivation for a larger project. They are fast to make (making you feel like you actually got something done, even if you don’t have much time or motivation to crochet), are a great stash busting project for using up leftover yarn, and this time of year, they make great stocking stuffers and teacher’s gifts! And now, the Coffeehouse Hot Cup Cozie crochet pattern is available free on the blog, so you can whip one up for all of those last-minute gifts you may find yourself needing. To make them even more perfect, pair them with a gift card to your recipient’s favorite local coffee shop for a match made in heaven!

Coffeehouse Cup Cozy Crochet Pattern Inspiration
I absolutely love crocheting the bean stitch (it’s one of my favorites!). I find it really fun to make. But, when I hear “bean”, my coffee loving brain automatically thinks “coffee bean”! (I can’t be the only one, right??) When I think “coffee bean” I think of the fun hipster coffeehouses where I always get the best coffee. (Pro tip: If the coffeehouse has a hipster vibe to it, you’re going to get a good cup of coffee. The more hipster it feels, the better the coffee is going to be. Trust me). Therefore, when I started creating patterns with the fantastic bean stitches, I needed a name to honor the wonderful coffee bean so many of us love. Hence, the “Coffeehouse” collection.
This pattern collection started with the Coffeehouse Beanie, a semi-made to measure pattern with a messy bun option, and my very first beanie pattern. Next came the wildly popular Coffeehouse Santa Hat, which has earned an Etsy “Bestseller” badge two years in a row! It has quickly become my best selling pattern of all time and it’s easy to see why so many people love it. It’s full of texture and lends itself easily to striping and fun colorwork.

So when I decided I wanted to add another cup cozy to my design collection, it obviously needed to be a Coffeehouse Cozy. I mean, how have I not yet made a coffee cup cozy crochet pattern for the Coffeehouse collection when the bean stitch reminds me of coffee beans?! That needed to be remedied ASAP. Plus, how cute would it be to make a matching Coffeehouse Cup Cozy and Santa Hat set? Perfect for carrying your hot chocolate while out doing holiday festivities!
Types of Cup Cozies
So while the Coffeehouse Hot Cup Cozy crochet pattern is available free here on the blog (just scroll down!), the downloadable PDF actually has instructions for four cozies – a hot cup cozy, an iced cup cozy, and two versions of an ice cream pint cozy. Both the hot and cold cup cozies are intended to fit on most 16 ounce to-go cups from your local coffeehouse and protect your hands from either the heat or frostiness of your drink. The hot cup cozy allows you to say, “No, thank you” to the single use cardboard sleeves most coffeehouses use (hello, sustainability) and the iced cup cozy also functions to catch the condensation as the ice melts. No more puddles beneath your cup!

The ice cream pint cozies keep your hands warm and your ice cream cold when eating straight out of the pint (because, who doesn’t?). While I like ice cream cozies without a bottom (I feel they stay put better), my mom prefers ones with a bottom, because she rests the pint against her pinky and her pinky gets cold if the cozy doesn’t have a bottom. So, in honor of my mom, I wrote this pattern with both options.

Yarn Suggestions
While any fiber would technically work, cotton tends to work best for a cup cozy crochet pattern. Of course, my favorite cotton is Dishie from WeCrochet. It’s soft, but sturdy, and comes in a variety of colors (Follower exclusive: Shopping WeCrochet? Use code “AWCFROMNICOLE” for 15% off your order!).
Another option is Lion Brand Re-Up Bonus Bundle. I used this yarn to make my Christmas themed red, green, and white cozy. It’s a recycled cotton/polyester blend, continuing with the eco-friendly theme, and comes in several gorgeous rustic colors. However, this yarn can be a little splitty, so keep that in mind when deciding to work with it.
However, if you have another cotton yarn that is your go-to, go for it! It will probably work just as well.

Techniques to Know
Invisible slst to join: After you complete the last st of the round, remove your hook from the loop, insert your hook from back to front through the first st of the round (make sure the working yarn is under your hook), put the loop back on your hook, and pull it through to the back. Chain and work the next round as written. Click HERE for more on this technique, including step by step pictures and video.
Working in the 3rd loop: In some rounds, you will be working into the 3rd loop of the hdc. It can be found directly behind and below the top loops you typically work into. Because this pattern is done in the round, the 3rd loop will be on the back side of your stitch. You may need to tilt your work towards you to see it.
Size
The finished cozy is approximately 4.25 in (10.8 cm) wide and 3.75 in (9.5 cm) when laid flat. They are intended to fit most 16 ounce hot beverage to-go cups.
Gauge
Approximately 14 sts by 10 rows of hdc = 4 inches x 4 inches (10 cm x 10 cm)
Notes
* This pattern is written using US terminology.
* The starting chain at the beginning of the round does NOT count as a stitch, so the first stitch will go in the same stitch as the starting chain. When you close each round, you will slip stitch to the top of the first stitch, NOT the starting chain.
* Stitch counts are only listed when they change. If no stitch count is listed, assume it is the same as the last listed stitch count.
* Numbers in ( ) at the end of the instruction refers to stitch count for that round.
Pattern
Round 1 (RS): To start, you can either fhdc 28 OR ch 29 and then hdc across starting in the 2nd ch from the hook. Crocheter’s choice. Making sure your row hasn’t twisted, invisible slst to the first stitch to join, forming a circle. (28)
NOTE: You will have a small gap at the bottom of this round. When you finish your cozie, use your tail to sew the gap closed.
Round 2 (RS): ch 1, hdc in the 3rd loop of each st around, invisible slst to the first st to join
Round 3 (RS): ch 1, sc in the 3rd loop of each st around, slst to the first st to join
Round 4 (RS): ch 1, *bean, ch 1, sk st**, repeat from * to ** around, slst to the first st to join
Round 5 (WS): ch 1, TURN, *bean, ch 1, sk st**, repeat from * to ** around, slst to the first st to join
Helpful Hint: The first bean will go in the join space. Each bean after that in this round will go in to the “side” of the bean from the round below, not in the chain or space between beans. This is what tilts the beans. Round 10 will also use this same stitch placement.
Round 6 (RS): ch 1, TURN, hdc in each st around, invisible slst to first st to join
Round 7 (RS): Repeat Round 2
Round 8 (RS): Repeat Round 3
Round 9 (WS): ch 1, TURN, *bean, ch 1, sk st**, repeat from * to ** around, slst to the first st to join
Round 10 (RS): ch 1, TURN, *bean, ch 1, sk st**, repeat from * to ** around, slst to the first st to join
Round 11 (RS): ch 1, hdc in each st around, invisible slst to first st to join
Rounds 12-13 (RS): Repeat Rounds 2 and 3
Fasten off, sew the gap closed in your starting band using your tail, and weave in your ends.
